How we compared these wash bags
LuxuryTrex sells two of the bags in this list. Read our picks with that in mind. We did not test the seven rival bags. They are compared from their makers’ published specifications and the GBP prices shown on each maker’s own UK product page on 9 October 2026. Prices exclude delivery and can change. The table says “not stated” where a maker gives no detail on the hook, lining or place of manufacture.
We left out bags with no maker price in pounds and bags listed as sold out with no ordering option.

The 9 wash bags in detail
1. LuxuryTrex Premium Mens Hanging Leather Wash Bag (German calf), £129.99
The Premium Mens Hanging Leather Wash Bag is full-grain German calf leather with a solid brass swivel hook, a water-resistant nylon lining, two zip compartments and three mesh pockets. Seams are hand-stitched with saddle stitching at the stress points. It folds to 28 × 18 × 8cm, opens to a 28 × 50cm hanging spread and weighs 480g.
- Best for: men who travel often and want firm full-grain leather with a proper hook. Our two bags are the only leather bags in this list whose makers state an integrated hook.
- Drawback: the lining is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Wipe out a leaking bottle promptly.
2. LuxuryTrex Italian Calf Hanging Toiletry Bag with mirror, £99.99
The Italian Calf Leather Hanging Toiletry Bag is smooth black Italian calf with a brass swivel hook, a water-resistant fabric lining and hand-stitched seams. It comes with a 9 × 12cm leather-bound travel mirror with a snap closure. Folded it measures 18 × 24 × 10cm and it opens to 56 × 24cm.
- Best for: a gift or anyone who shaves in hotel rooms with poor light. The mirror is the main difference from the German calf version.
- Drawback: at 620g it is the heavier of our two bags. It comes in black only.
3. Lifeventure Hanging Wash Bag, £26.99
The Lifeventure Hanging Wash Bag is high-density ripstop nylon with a tuck-away metal hanger, a separate carry handle and a detachable mirror. Lifeventure lists it at 234 × 150 × 105mm and gives a 3-year warranty against material and workmanship defects.
- Best for: the lowest price for a bag with a built-in hanger. Nylon suits damp gym bags and rough packing.
- Drawback: Lifeventure does not state the lining material or where the bag is made. Nylon will not age the way leather does.
4. Rains Wash Bag Small, £29
The Rains Wash Bag Small uses a polyester base with Rains’ PU coating. It holds 3 litres, measures H 13 × D 11 × W 21cm and carries Rains’ W3 light-rain protection rating. The product page states a 2-year warranty.
- Best for: a compact, easy-to-wipe bag for flights and short trips where small size counts for more than organisation.
- Drawback: Rains lists a webbing carry handle rather than a hook. A light-rain rating says nothing about containing a leak from inside.
5. M&S Autograph Leather Pebble Grain Washbag, £40
The M&S Autograph Leather Pebble Grain Washbag is 100% leather, excluding trimmings, with a 100% polyester lining and a carry strap. It measures H 13 × W 15.5 × L 25cm and M&S gives wipe-clean care advice.
- Best for: the cheapest real leather in this comparison as a simple pouch for home or weekends.
- Drawback: M&S does not state the leather grade or a warranty. No hanging hook is listed.
6. Barbour Leather Washbag, £69.95
The Barbour Leather Washbag in dark brown is 100% leather with a 100% polyester lining, a grab handle and an external zipped pocket. It measures H 14 × W 24 × D 12.7cm. Barbour’s direct-sale terms cover material defects for 12 months from delivery.
- Best for: a classic leather pouch from a well-known name at under £70.
- Drawback: no hanging hook is listed and Barbour does not state the leather grade. This is a different product from Barbour’s waxed hanging wash bags.
7. Tusting Horizon in Leather, £295
The Tusting Horizon in Leather is made in Buckinghamshire in either oil-treated Aztec Crazyhorse or aniline-dyed, wax-finished Sundance Floodlight leather. It has a wipeable nylon lining, two internal slip pockets and a hanging loop. It measures 24.5 × 11.5 × 12.5cm. Tusting offers a lifetime commitment to repair or replace manufacturing faults free of charge.
- Best for: English-made leather with long-term repair backing.
- Drawback: it has a loop rather than a hook. Small-batch production can delay dispatch.
8. Ettinger Capra Wash Bag, £370
The Ettinger Capra Wash Bag is goat leather with jacquard-lined pockets. Ettinger says it is handcrafted in the UK. It measures 23 × 8 × 13cm closed. Ettinger gives a 3-year warranty on manufacturing defects for purchases from authorised retailers.
- Best for: a compact goat leather bag made in the UK with a 3-year warranty.
- Drawback: the main lining is not stated and no hanging hook appears in the feature list.
9. Bennett Winch Leather Wash Bag, £465
The Bennett Winch Leather Wash Bag is full-grain, vegetable-tanned Italian leather made in England. It has a waterproof Italian nylon lining and a removable zipped wet compartment. At H 17 × W 14 × L 34cm it has the longest closed length stated in this list. New purchases from Bennett Winch or official retailers carry a lifetime repair promise.
- Best for: buyers who want the most protection against leaks in a leather bag with no budget limit.
- Drawback: the black version was sold out for immediate dispatch and on pre-order when checked. The next batch was due mid November. No hook is listed.
Price comparison
Under £50 you get nylon, coated polyester or a simple leather pouch. Between £69.95 and £130 sit the Barbour and both LuxuryTrex bags. Above £290 sit the three UK-made bags, two of them with lifetime repair promises.
How to choose a men’s wash bag
Leather grade
Full-grain leather keeps the original surface of the hide and develops a patina with use. Top-grain is lightly sanded for a more even finish and is still a good material. Avoid bags sold only as “genuine leather” or “bonded leather”. Both are lower grades. Several makers here say “100% leather” without stating a grade. Our Italian leather vs English leather guide covers how origin affects feel and finish. Italian leather and made in Italy are different claims: Bennett Winch uses Italian leather and makes the bag in England.
Hook vs loop
Makers use different terms for hanging hardware. Each behaves differently in a bathroom:
- Integrated hook: a hook fixed to the bag that clips over a towel rail, shower rail or door top. Listed on the Lifeventure and both LuxuryTrex bags.
- Hanging loop: a fabric or leather loop that needs an existing peg or hook to hang from. Tusting describes a loop.
- Handle or strap: for carrying and sometimes for hanging on a peg. Rains, M&S and Barbour list these.
- Swivel: a hook that rotates lets the bag face you whichever way the rail runs. Both LuxuryTrex hooks swivel.
Lining
The lining does the real work when a bottle leaks. Look for nylon or coated fabric that you can wipe or wash. Bennett Winch is the only maker here that calls its lining waterproof. Tusting describes washable nylon. M&S and Barbour use polyester. Both LuxuryTrex bags use water-resistant linings that wipe clean.
Hardware
Solid brass outlasts plated zinc and wears to a warm colour. If the bag will hang fully packed, a metal hook is worth having over a plastic one.
Stitching
Saddle stitching passes one thread through each hole from both sides using two needles, so a single broken stitch does not unravel the seam. Machine lockstitch can run if a thread fails. Check the corners, the hook attachment and the zip ends. More detail in our guide to bag stitching quality.
Hanging vs flat wash bags
A flat pouch packs into odd corners of a case and works well at home or on a weekend away with plenty of counter space. A hanging bag earns its place in small hotel bathrooms, shared bathrooms and gym changing rooms. It keeps your kit off wet surfaces and shows everything at once.
Hanging bags with a full opening spread need a rail or door to hang from. Our German calf opens to 50cm. If you mostly travel light with a few items, a pouch such as the Rains or M&S is enough.
Sizing by trip length
These suggestions use each maker’s stated dimensions rather than packing trials.
| Trip | Typical kit | Size to look for | Bags in this list at that size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overnight or weekend | Travel-size bottles, razor, toothbrush, deodorant | About 20 to 25cm long | Rains Small, Lifeventure, M&S Autograph, Ettinger Capra |
| 3 to 7 nights | Above plus shaving kit, medication, hair product | About 24 to 28cm long | Barbour, Tusting Horizon, both LuxuryTrex bags |
| 1 to 2 weeks or full-size bottles | Full-size shampoo and shower gel, electric toothbrush | Longer, 30cm plus | Bennett Winch |
If you fly, check your departure airport’s current liquids rules and keep liquids in a separate clear bag if required.
Care for a leather wash bag
- Wipe the outside monthly with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and dry it straight away.
- Condition every 3 to 6 months with a neutral leather conditioner.
- Empty and wipe the lining after any leak and leave the bag open to dry.
- Keep it away from long periods of direct sunlight, alcohol-based cleaners and pooled water.
Oil-treated or wax-finished leathers such as Tusting’s may need their maker’s own care products. Check before using a general conditioner.
Buying checklist
- Real leather with a stated grade, or a synthetic you can wipe clean
- Integrated metal hook if you want it to hang, not only a loop
- Nylon or coated lining, ideally with a separate wet compartment
- Two compartments if you carry a shaving kit
- Dimensions that fit your largest bottle and your toothbrush
- Brass or solid metal zips and hook
- A stated warranty, and what it excludes
- In stock, or a dispatch date that suits your trip
Summary
For leather with a proper brass hook, our German calf Premium Mens Hanging Leather Wash Bag at £129.99 is the firmer bag for regular travel, and the Italian calf version with a travel mirror at £99.99 is the lowest-priced leather bag here with an integrated hook and makes the better gift. On a budget, the Lifeventure hangs for £26.99 and the Rains is a compact £29 travel pouch. If you want English manufacture and lifetime repair, Tusting and Bennett Winch are the picks, at a much higher price.

Questions answered
Is a wash bag the same as a toiletry bag or a Dopp kit? +
Yes, in practice. Wash bag is the usual British name, toiletry bag is the general term, and Dopp kit is the American name taken from an old brand. All three describe a zipped bag for razor, toothbrush, deodorant and bottles. Shapes vary more than names do: some are simple pouches, others open out and hang from a hook.
Do I need a hanging hook, or is a loop enough? +
A hook clips over a towel rail or door top so the open bag hangs where you can reach everything. A loop needs a peg or hook already in the bathroom. In this comparison only the Lifeventure and both LuxuryTrex bags list an integrated hook. Tusting describes a hanging loop. Rains, M&S and Barbour list a handle or strap. Ettinger and Bennett Winch do not state any hanging hardware.
Is leather practical for a wash bag? +
Leather works well when the inside is lined, because the lining takes the spills and the leather only sees splashes. Keep it out of the shower and wipe it dry if it gets wet. If your bag will sit in damp gym changing rooms or get thrown about in a rucksack, a nylon or polyester bag such as Lifeventure or Rains is easier to live with.
What happens if a bottle leaks inside the bag? +
The lining decides how bad it gets. Bennett Winch lists a waterproof nylon lining and a removable wet compartment. Tusting describes its nylon lining as washable. Both LuxuryTrex bags use water-resistant linings that wipe clean. A water-resistant lining slows a leak rather than sealing it, so empty the bag, wipe it and let it air dry open.
What size wash bag do I need? +
For a weekend, a bag around 20 to 25cm long holds travel-size bottles, a razor and a toothbrush. For a week, look at 24 to 28cm with two compartments. Full-size shampoo bottles need a bigger or taller bag, such as the Bennett Winch at 34cm long. Buy for what you carry on a typical trip.
Do expensive wash bags come with better warranties? +
Often, though not always. Tusting offers a lifetime commitment on manufacturing faults and Bennett Winch a lifetime repair promise on new purchases. Ettinger gives 3 years. Barbour gives 12 months under its direct-sale terms. At the other end, Lifeventure gives 3 years on a £26.99 bag. Both LuxuryTrex bags come with 30-day returns. Read the exclusions, because wear and misuse are usually not covered.
